Disputed Elections: Understanding Contested Results in U.S. History.Civics & HistoryHave Presidential results ever been disputed, debated and decided by the congress and not by the people? Have the winners ever lost? In this course we will discuss six elections where the results were in dispute, how those disputes were eventually settled, and how those settlements impacted the history of our country. We will also examine six elections where either a third party influenced the outcome or the winner of the popular vote won the election but it was not disputed. Election of 1800: What happens if there is a tie? Election of 1824: What happens if no one wins a majority in the Electoral College? Elections of 1876: Can the winner lose a Presidential election? Well yes, with some help! Election of 1912: A Bull Moose throws his hat in the ring and creates nomination chaos? Elections of 1968 and 2020: How tumultuous years in America impact nominations, elections results, and claims of victory? Election of 2000: So, was it really all about “Florida, Florida, Florida?” Elections of 1860, 1888, 1948, 1960, 1992, 2016: In these four of elections (1860, 1948, 1992 & 2016) a third party had an impact. In one the loser clearly wins (1888), and in one (1960) it was so close both sides had a claim of victory..Fall 2026 -
