Art Outside the BoxCivics & HistoryArt Outside the Box is an exciting and unique opportunity to explore the work of artists who don’t necessarily “play by the rules." In fact, many of the artworks featured in this class were exhibited outside the traditional gallery space or were constructed with surprising mediums. Discuss how temporary pieces of art can have lasting impacts on the world long after they’ve been disassembled. Each week will focus on a different creative element and we'll compare and contrast two artists and their interpretations of that element. This interactive class encourages participants to share their perspectives and interpretations of the artwork while discussing some unusual artistic practices. Plus, there are no wrong answers! Session 1: Words & Language in Art; artists discussed: Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger Session 2: Land Art & Earthworks; artists discussed: Christo & Jeanne-Claude and Ana Mendieta Session 3: Sculpture & Installation; artists discussed: Judy Chicago and Louise Bourgeois Session 4: Public Artworks: artists discussed: Kara Walker and Kehinde WileyFall 2026 -
