NEW! Say Her Name: Leveraging records to find a maiden name

Women often lack direct documentation so we must focus on records where they are mentioned in connection to others. This class will discuss the different records, beyond a marriage record, which you should be looking for to help to determine or confirm your ancestor’s maiden name. We will look at census records, newspaper/obituaries, marriage and baptism/christening records with an emphasis on who were the witnesses or sponsors to those events, land deeds, and family papers. We will also focus on a woman’s children’s vital records and Social Security applications as a tool for finding her name. This class has many great examples from women from all walks of life and time periods.

Audience: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced.
